New training curriculum for the textile sector

Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA), the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) and Consultants; Gherzi Consulting Engineers Private Limited in a joint venture with Voyants Solutions Private Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide up-to-date relevant training and skills upgrading for EPZ apparel firms aimed at bridging the skills and productivity gaps along the value chain.
New/existing sewing operators, line supervisors and production planners working in the EPZ apparel firms have an opportunity to undergo the training aimed at increasing the productivity of the most dominant sector in the EPZ program.
Speaking during the signing ceremony of the MoU at the Technology Development Center (TDC) in Athi River, Dr. Joseph Kiplagat, Director of Industrial Information and Research at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives commended the institutions for being at the forefront in launching initiatives aimed at improving the apparel sector which is expected to play a big role in delivering the manufacturing component under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four plan for economic development.
Using a training curriculum approved by NITA, the apparel manufacturers can tailor-make programmes to suit their operations while new investors setting up within the EPZ framework will get skilled workers from the large pool of the trained workforce.
“This is expected to reduce the turn – around production time as well as provide an assurance to the investor/s of available, skilled labour,” noted Mr Laban Onditi, Board Director, EPZA.
